Meet the Author

A life-long nature and outdoor enthusiast and having benefitted from his experiences as a Sea Scout which engendered an enjoyment of nature untrammeled, Dr. Colin Osborne, III sensed a need to give a more complete picture of the creation of the Lumber River State Park and the designation of major portions of the river as a Federal Wild and Scenic River.

This website documents the efforts of many groups and individuals who were inspired and worked diligently to preserve the Lumber River.  Dr. Osborne was directly involved in these efforts as a member of Lumber River Basin Committee, Lumber River Citizens Advisory Committee, Lumber River Canoe Club,  Sensible Concerns about Toxins, United Citizens Concerned for the Ecology, the Conservation Council of North Carolina, American Rivers and the Nature Conservancy, as well as participation in The Upper Lumber River Conservancy.

Fellow river conservationists have urged Dr. Osborne to create a written record of the activities leading to the designations which has resulted in this website.  The website will continue to be amended as additional information, history, and documentation is found.
